Campus Provost (Campus Chief Executive Officer) for Potomac State College of West Virginia University

West Virginia University is accepting nominations and applications for the Campus Provost for Potomac State College of West Virginia University who serves as the chief executive officer of the College. The position reports to the President of West Virginia University through the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The occupant of the position is a member of the Provost’s Senior Administrators’ Group.

West Virginia University ( http://www.wvu.edu) was founded in 1867 and is a land grant institution which has a Carnegie classification as “Research University – High Research Activity.” Its main campus with 30,000 students is in Morgantown, WV. It has divisions in Keyser (Potomac State College of WVU) and Montgomery (WVU Institute of Technology). There is also a Charleston Division of the University’s Health Sciences Center.

Founded in 1901, Potomac State College of West Virginia University is located in Keyser, West Virginia, 150 miles west of Washington, DC and 80 miles east of the main campus of West Virginia University in Morgantown. Through traditional two-year liberal arts curricula transferable to four-year institutions and through a variety of two-year technical curricula, the College offers eight Associate in Arts degrees, seven Associate in Applied Science degree programs and two bachelor degrees. There are 43 full-time and approximately 65 part-time faculty members plus 93 full-time staff members, serving a student population of around 1800.

Potomac State College of West Virginia University is a residential two-year college. Among its characteristics, the College features five residence halls housing nearly 700 students, intercollegiate athletic programs associated with the NJCAA, and comprehensive agricultural programs built around two operating farms situated on 768 acres. Additionally, in 2010, the College was the beneficiary of an estate receiving a 152-acre farm that will be integrated into the farm operations. The physical plant also includes a 43,000-volume, on-campus library, a 1,000-seat cultural arts center, and thirteen other academic, administrative and athletic buildings.  The library was recently upgraded, undergoing a $2 million renovation. University Place, a 352-bed residential and modern dining facility, was opened in 2007. In September 2011, the College acquired a nearby facility that will be renovated, providing nearly 50 additional beds. The facility’s scheduled opening is August 2012.

Since 1926, the College has held continuous accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The most recent accreditation visit was in Spring 2004. The institution was reaccredited without any deficiencies.

Effective July 1, 2005, Potomac State College of WVU became a fully integrated division of West Virginia University. That means that Potomac State College of WVU functions much like any other college/school of West Virginia University, while still maintaining its distinctive niche in the higher educational system of West Virginia. The budget and governance processes mirror those of the college/schools on the Morgantown campus. However, Potomac State College of WVU continues to have its own academic culture and appeals to a somewhat different market segment of students. Therefore, while there are many ways in which Potomac State College of WVU is considered a college/school of the University, Potomac State College, in many significant ways, retains its own identity.
