Relationship to WVU

Students at Potomac State College are part of the West Virginia University family.  WVU is a major research institution and West Virginia's flagship university.  WVU is the state's only research doctoral-granting, land-grant university.  WVU provides high quality programs of instruction, offering nearly 200 degree programs at the undergraduate, graduate, doctorate and professional levels.

Potomac State College students enjoy many benefits of being part of West Virginia University:

  • STAR, WVU's online customer service system. Using BANNER software, STAR enables students to register for classes, check their grades, learn their financial status, pay bills and more - all with the click of a mouse.

  • Mountaineer Information Express, or MIX, the University's Web site for faculty and students. Students can log on to MIX to check their e-mail, register for classes or browse the Internet.

  • Catamount Card, student identification card.  At Potomac State, students will be able to use this card to pay for meals, laundry services or snacks.

  • Bachelors of Applied Science degree in Business Management and Criminal Justice on the Potomac State campus.

  • WVU's College of Business and Economics offers the Executive MBA program on the Potomac State campus.

  • An enhanced WVU scholarship program allows new freshman who enroll at Potomac State and who eventually transfer to WVU to be eligible for WVU scholarships they would have received had they initially enrolled in Morgantown.

  • A $19 million, residence hall- University Place- was opened in August 2007. A part of WVU's latest capital improvements bond package, the new dorm accommodates the growing enrollment and complements three existing traditional halls that make the campus able to accommodate over 600 on-campus students.

  • The Morgantown campus is only 90 minutes away, and Potomac State College students receive free or discounted tickets to athletic, cultural and social events such as WVU's Up All Night and a free weekend program of movies, music, food, and comedy clubs, among other events.

  • Students have access to the WVU Libraries with more than one million volumes and hundreds of print and electronic journals and databases.

  • After attending Potomac State College, students transferring to WVU are considered intra-University transfers. These students pay no application fee; receive priority status for registration and academic records automatically become part of the student's University records.

The array of online services and expanded course offerings are just some of the benefits students at Potomac State College of West Virginia University were able to benefit from when Potomac State became a division of WVU.

Potomac State's transition from a regional campus of WVU to a fully integrated division, much like a college or school on the Morgantown campus, took effect on July 1, 2005.

From an operational standpoint, Potomac State is now able to offer services under WVU's umbrella that it could not afford to provide as a regional campus with its own budget.

"As a unified institution, we can get economies of scale that they couldn't get as an independent institution," said Russ Dean, a Senior Associate Provost on the Morgantown campus who helped to oversee the transition.

"We have already experienced both operational and financial efficiencies in the areas where transitions have been completed," Potomac State Campus Provost Kerry Odell said. "The integration with WVU will allow us to better serve our students and to enhance our faculty, staff and facilities."
