Potomac State Orientation (PSO) Event Information

Your participation in a Potomac State Orientation (PSO) session is the next step in ensuring your success as a college student. Check in will begin at approximately 8:30 a.m. at Church McKee Arts Center with the program starting promptly at 9:00 a.m.

At a PSO event, students will have the opportunity to speak with an academic advisor to discuss academic plans and register for classes for the upcoming academic year; meet individually with financial aid counselors to discuss your financial aid package; attend question and answer sessions with academic support services, dining services, bookstore, student accounts and athletic department staff; meet will housing and residential life staff to ask questions and reserve a room in one of our residence halls; tour campus and complete placement testing (if needed).

Placement Testing Information

Students attending a Potomac State Orientation (PSO) event may take placement tests in the areas of English or Math. Initial recommendations about placement tests are made based on the student's ACT or SAT scores and identified major of study.

MATH : Students who do not have a minimum score of a 19 on the mathematics section of the ACT or 460 on the quantitative portion of the SAT may be offered the opportunity to take the ACCUPLACER placement test in arithmetic and elementary algebra.

Students with scores above the minimum may be required to take the PSC Math Placement Exam or the WVU QRA test for placement into college level math courses.

ENGLISH: Students who do not have a minimum score of 18 on the English section of the ACT or 450 on the verbal portion of the SAT may be offered the opportunity to take the ACCUPLACER placement test in sentence skills.

Students with ACT or SAT scores above the minimum will be placed directly into English 101.

Potomac State students will only take the sentence skills, arithmetic, and elementary algebra sections. Use of calculators is not allowed on the arithmetic or elementary algebra sections of the test.
