Upcoming Alumni Events

Welcome to a new feature on Potomac State College's Web site,

Historic Photo of the Month.

This is where we call on the memories of our alumni to help gather information about photographs from our archives. Each month we will post a new photograph and ask for your feedback identifying individuals and telling us what you remember about the event and when it took place. Even if you can't help us with the photograph but have an interesting story relating to the event, we're interested in learning about that too.

Please e-mail your comments to LMNichols@mail.wvu.edu

This month's  photograph is the first photo below.

(Please continue scrolling down to read the comments

we have received regarding the other posted photographs.)

Dear Libby,
It was quite a surprise and definitely a blast from the past to open the March 2007 Catamount Spirit and see myself in the Historic Photo of the Month!  I'm the tall one in the back.  I recognize all the gals but only remember the names of two.  Gloria Iser is leftmost in the front row and Tadjana Gank is standing beside her in the front row.  Also, I'm pretty sure Ric Sirlouis took the picture.  And, I think we were all Homecoming Queen candidates...

On another note, my dad, Dr. Robert Naylor, died August 31, 2006.  He taught chemistry at PSC from 1972 to the late 80's.  I thought it might be appropriate to announce this in your publication if you haven't already.  If you have, could you resend the issue via email to me because I missed it somehow?

Also, you may send future issues of Catamount Spirit to this email address.

Thanks,

(Date Unknown-- Pictured Center is Richard Smith, retired PSC Police Officer)

I must admit I was surprised when my sister forwarded the website to me as it certainly takes me back.  The person in the ball cap is me and the other guy is Darren Stockett.  We used to play ping pong with "Champ" on a daily basis and were a regular doubles team as well.  We were both graduates of the '95 class.  Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to speak with Darren in a number of years but understand he is now living in the Morgantown area and is married with children.  I now live in the Washington, PA area and am married with a 3-yr old daughter and a son on the way.

Thanks for the stroll down memory lane and let "Champ" know that the real Champ says "Hello" and sure hope he is well.  What a great guy he was to all of the students.

Dan Smith
Class of '95

PS - I believe the guy in the chair against the window with the hat on backwards is Chris Bradshaw who was also a graduate of '95 and an eventual graduate of the WVU Forestry program.

Michael Wilson

Class of '95

I remember those 2 guys with Rich in the picture online. The date is between 1993-1995 below the Student Union. I don't remember their names since it has been about 15 years. They use to play table tennis a lot with Rich. He would brag that he was the "champ." I remember Rich would be a friend to anyone. He is very cool!

Ross Burton
Bridgeport, WV
Graduate of Keyser High School 1987
Attended Potomac State College 1987 through 1989

This picture is comprised of students from Mrs. Shaffer's Keyser High
School classes 10-12 on a visit to the Potomac State College Campus -
Science Hall Building I believe, looking in the direction of the
Shipper Library.  I can remember this day, but sadly cannot remember
the occasion.  I think the ribbon on Jay could be a clue.  Please let
me know should the event be identified.  I have many fond memories of
my time in Mrs. Shaffer's classes and hope all in the photo are doing
well.  I can name everyone in the picture except the gentleman in the
first row:

Row 1 - Ray Barr, Jay Courrier
Row 2 - Kevin Beavers, Julie Smith, Krista Kane, Stacey Shook, Sonja
House, Dan McNeil, Mrs. Jenny Shaffer
Row 3 - David Bruce, Ronna Mathias, Chris King, Ross Burton, Moses
Bunting, Jeff Chadbourne, Dean Agnew
Row 4 - Phil Shepp, Kevin Cuppet, Rex Broome, Tressie Bosley, Sean
Hill, Lance Barb, Eddie Ebert
Row 5 - Trent Redman, Randy Mangold, Andy Stennett

Michelle White (Stanislawczyk)
Attended PSC 1994

I know some of the students in the photo.  It would have been one of Jenny Shaffer's History Classes.  I am not sure of everyone but I can do the best I can.

Row 1- The little guy in the front looks like Ray Barr,  Jay Courrier,
Row 2- 6th person is Sonja House, Danny McNeil, Mrs. Shaffer
Row 3- 3rd person is Chris King, Ross Burton, Tressie Bosley, Sean Hill, Lance Barber,
Back Row- 2nd person is Kevin Cuppett, Trent Redman, Rex Broome, and Randy Mongold

Military Ball 1973

1973 Military Ball (Written on back of the photograph.)

Donna J. (Book) Smith
Attended PSC Sept. '71 through Dec. '73
Mission Project Analyst for Honeywell at
Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD

"OMG, I can't even believe that picture of the month. I just happened to be surfing, and had the PSC site bookmarked.

I can't believe that I remembered all of their names except for two. From left to right -- Robin Dohrman, Terry Bradfield, Natalie Workman, Ron Smith, Colleen Hannah (seated), Kone Brugh, Paula Black, Mike Bulger, Lyn Compton, Terry Smith.

It's hard to believe that I was younger than my daughter, who is a Junior at East Carolina University, is now.

Thanks for the memories and I will check back from time to time to see the pictures and see what else is new. It was fun reminiscing. As they say, 'I wish I knew then what I know now." I would love to receive the newsletter. PSC is certainly growing."

Mike Bulger (Brookline)
Graduated 1973

"Concerning the 1972 photo of the Military Ball, those in the photo are from left to right, Robin Dohrman, Terry Bradfield, Natalie Workman (who married classmate Ron Tenaglio), Ron Smith, Queen of the ball Colleen Hannah of Keyser, Kone Brugh, Paula Black who has been married to her escort Mike Bulger for 32 years.Lynn Compton of Keyser. I don't remember the name of the man on the far right. I do remember that after continually reminding the others of a higher than normal top step leading up to the stage, I was the one who tripped and fell."

Robin (Dohrman) Ayers
Graduated  1973

"Heck yes, I recognize people in the Military Ball photo! I believe it was 1973 though. That's the year we all graduated from PSC! I'm the girl on the left, Robin Dohrman(married and divorced Kam Jeffries, Class of '73 also. Married now to Kenneth Ayers). Next to me is Natalie Workman(married Ron Tenaglio, Class of '73,) Colleen Hannah(Raschella,) Paula ?, and Lynn Compton. We were all the ROTC sponsors. We carried the banner for the ROTC guys when they marched in parades. We had these SUPER short navy wool jumpers, gold turtlenecks, navy stretch boots and navy and gold capes. We looked GOOD!

The guys were the 2nd year ROTC guys(and THEY looked good, too!) (Michael)Terry Bradfield, Ron Smith, Kone Brugh (married Nancy Taylor, Class of '73), Mike Bulger, and Joe Wolfe (I think.) Terry and Kone went on to be career military. Terry was a chaplain, who helped with recovery at the Pentagon tragedy. I think Ron was med school the last time I heard anything, and Joe became a dentist.

Oh, and I was the first female ROTC cadet at PSC. I took 2 semesters my sophomore year. There were 2 other girls, but each only took 1 semester. I won outstanding freshman cadet my sophomore year. Actually, they just gave it to me for surviving without killing anyone! I had trouble with my rights and lefts, and my cousin, Terry, had to take me out of the group to drill, so I wouldn't kill him with my weapon!

A friend gave my husband a copy of the Catamount Spirit, which I don't get, so you can imagine my shock when this picture popped out at me!! It was a GREAT time of life with many good memories! Please let me know how I can start receiving this publication myself.

Oh, and I went on to get Vocational Home Economics, Elementary Ed., Severe/Profound Disabilities, Hearing Impairment, and Vision degrees and have taught at the Schools for the Deaf and Blind for 24 years. My lifelong mentor and friend was the late Mrs. Elizabeth Hanlin, professor of Home Economics at PSC."

Colonel (Retired) Kone Brugh II
Graduated 1973

I've been contacted by old friends that I've been out of touch with for years over this photo which was actually taken in 1973, not 1972.  From left to right the people in the photo are; Robin Dohrman, Terry Bradfield, Sammie Gee, Ron Smith, Colleen Hannah, Kone Brugh (myself), Paula Black, Mike Bulger, Mary Compton and Terrance Smith.  I'm afraid I've lost contact with all but two or three of these great folks.  I went on from Potomac State to graduate from WVU at Morgantown and took a Regular Army commission.  I finally retired as a Colonel in 2003 and settled down in Abingdon, Maryland, where I now work for a Science Applications International in the homeland defense sector.  Potomac State College had a profound influence on my life as mandatory ROTC lead to a career in the Army but more importantly, I met my future wife and lifelong companion, Nancy Diane Taylor at Potomac State.  Thanks for the memories!
