Potomac State Golf Wins Fall Opener

The WPCC golf season got underway on Aug. 28th at Oakland Golf Club in Oakland, Maryland. The host Catamounts started off the 2011 fall season right where they left off a year ago, with a tournament victory. This time it was a new face in the form of Freshman Matt Nelson who led the way. Matt, a native of Barrie, Ontario Canada, fired an even par 71 on his way to medalist honors. In second place were Chris Bushey of Potomac State and Paul Ajak of CCAC- North, both shooting three over par 74 on the day.

On a team side of things, the Catamounts cruised to victory while posting all 5 players with scores in the 70’s and shooting a tournament best 300 on the day. The next closest competitor was Butler County Community College with a score of 336.

“Matt had a great round and was playing the course blind, so a score of even par is not easy,” said Potomac State Head Coach Aaron Edwards. The Catamounts posted there best score at any opener under the current coach. “We played well as a team, no one had a bad round, and they all posted good scores, This is the best team score we have ever posted both at Oakland and in a season opener, so it is a great way to kick off the year.” Rounding out the scoring for the Catamounts were Ryan MacPherson at 77, Kyle Hudgins at 78, and Mike Toth at 78.

The Catamounts next WPCC match will be Friday September 9th at Norvelt Golf Club.
