Catamounts take 4th at NCAA DII Golf Event
The Potomac State College golf team stepped up the competition level a bit and headed to Parkersburg, WV this past weekend for the 14th annual Burger King Invitational. The tournament featured 12 total schools in the event and several of the elite NCAA DII Eastern Regional schools were in attendance. Potomac State was the only NJCAA school that participated in the event.
On day one, the weather held out and the tournament got off to a great start. Leading the way for the Catamounts was Chris Bushey, who opened with a one under par score of 70 that left him positioned in a tie for 4th after the first day. On the team side, the Catamounts again played well together and posted a solid 292 on the day and found themselves in 4th place at the end of completion. The team again did not post a score in the 80’s and received scores of 72, 74, 76, and 78 from Matt Nelson, Mike Toth, Ryan MacPherson, and Kyle Hudgins respectively. On the individual side, Mitch O’Shell also posted a score of 75 on day 1.
Day two started with rain and ended with more rain, but the tournament went on. In the extreme conditions that had every golfer soaked, the team again held strong and posted a solid 305 on the day. This score was good for the third best on the day and was able to keep the Catamounts anchored securely in the 4th spot for a tournament total of 597. Again Chris Bushey led the team with a solid 73 on the day and took home All-Tournament team honors with a third place overall finish. Also placing in the top twenty of the event was Matt Nelson and Mitch O’Shell who tied for eleventh and Mike Toth who placed twentieth overall.
The Catamounts did walk away as the only team to brave the elements and not post a single score in the 80’s, and this marks the third straight round they have done so. “This consistency will be our strength all year long,” said Potomac State Head Coach Aaron Edwards. “Any golfer will tell you that at some point your going to have a bad day, but so far we have be able to salvage these days, and still post good scores. It's not easy playing in a driving rain storm and to still not post a single round in the 80’s, is quite amazing”
Overall, IUP took home first place team honors with a score of 572, followed by University of Charleston, then West Chester University. The Catamounts best ever finish at the Burger King invitational was a 2nd place finish in the fall of 2008.
The team tees it up again this weekend at WPCC events, then will head into another 4 year college event over the weekend as they head to the Shenandoah University invitational starting Sunday.
