Potomac State College of WVU- Golf

Frequently Asked Questions.

What kind of Golf program does Potomac State College of WVU have?

Potomac State has one of the premiere NJCAA Golf programs in the country.  Each and every season we strive to uphold the long tradition that has been established at Potomac State.  Potomac State College has won the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference (WPCC) six out of the past eight years and has competed in the NJCAA National Tournaments in Phoenix, Arizona and Chautauqua, N.Y.  Potomac State Golfers also take an annual trip to Myrtle Beach.  This year we played the World Tour course and some of the top courses in South Carolina. You will have the opportunity to compete at the highest level of JUCO golf, develop your game and look to move on to a NCAA golf program.

What are your practice facilities like?  How close are they to campus?  How often can team members play there?  What about other courses?

Less than a mile away from campus is Polish Pines Golf Course.  Polish Pines is the home course for the Potomac State Golf team.  Polish Pines has a driving range, putting green and a 9 -hole course.  All Potomac State Golf team members are given a membership to the course and can use the course anytime.

In addition to unlimited play at Polish Pines, the Potomac State Golf team takes frequent trips to the Cumberland (MD) Country Club as a team to play there.  This is a private facility that is normally not open to anyone other than members but as a member of Potomac State's Golf team we are afforded this luxury.

During our season we play on some of the finest courses in the area.

What about off-season workouts and conditioning?

Potomac State Golfers are encouraged to elevate their game by getting stronger. Each team member will be enrolled in a conditioning class and will receive college credit for participation in a conditioning program. We are fortunate to have an on-campus, weight room facility that is open throughout the week. The weight room has a wide variety of machines, treadmills and free weights.  A stronger player is a better player.  Potomac State is also fortunate to have a full-time athletic trainer to assist with conditioning and rehabilitation in the event of injury.  The coaching staff also has an off-season workout program as well as off-season indoor hitting sessions.

How much time does the team spend practicing? Also, do you work with your players to help their games, such as swing tips?

There are two full seasons for a golfer at Potomac State College. In the fall we will typically compete in several tournaments and matches that will prepare us for our spring conference schedule.  In the spring we will have a full schedule of matches and practice rounds.  Most players typically get out at least three to four times a week.  Remember, you are a student first, so if there are issues with classes, academics come first over practices.  As far as swing tips and improving your game, if a player is struggling Coach Edwards will work with them to improve their mechanics and mental approach, while Coach Edwards is not a trained golf professional, he has been playing his entire life and played at the college level.

Does the college offer scholarship money to their players and if so how do you apply?

Potomac State does offer scholarships to golfers on a limited basis.  Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the coach and will be awarded on a case-by-case basis.  For more information about scholarships contact Head Coach Aaron Edwards.

What other important information can you provide me about Potomac State College?

Potomac State College is a fully integrated division of West Virginia University offering two-year associate degrees for transfer to WVU and other four-year institutions; two-year career and technical degrees and some four-year degrees. The College also offers residence halls. Potomac State offers the prestige of a major school with the friendliness of a small campus. Students get the best of both places: a curriculum designed at a well-respected research university delivered in a smaller classroom setting. One major advantage to our eight athletic programs is that students experience playing time as opposed to sitting the bench their first two year in college.
