Baseball: Kowalo clubs Potomac State past Allegany

Cumberland, MD- Potomac State’s Andrew Kowalo hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to ice the game as Potomac State College defeated Allegany College of Maryland Wednesday at Memorial Field for the Catamounts’ 20th win of the season.

Kowalo’s home run opened the Potomac State lead from 5-4 to 8-4, as Evan Mitchell, who entered the game in the fifth in relief of starter Sam Vincenzo, pitched two more of his three scoreless innings to gain the win.

Mitchell struck out five and allowed just one run to improve to 8-1 on the season.

Kowalo had two singles as well as the home run, while Russell Schwertfeger added two singles.

Allegany, which hit five doubles on the day, was led by Miguel Torres with two doubles and a single. Colton Sivic, Blane McGuirk and Brady Hillegas all doubled, and Dave Ormsby had two singles and knocked in a run.

ACM jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first when Torres scored on a sacrifice fly from Wyatt Belinda.

The Trojans added two more runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead.

Potomac State answered with two runs in the fourth on RBI’s from Schwertfeger and Daniel Kerwin.

Then in the fifth the Catamounts took a 4-3 lead when Korey Foltz scored on an RBI single from Matt Jeffery and then Kowalo scored on a wild pitch.

ACM tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Colton Sivic walked with two outs and then came around to score on a pinch-hit double from Blayne McQuirk.

The Catamounts regained the lead in the seventh when Kowalo scored from third on a balk from the Allegany pitcher.

In the eighth Schwertfeger and Fraser Brown both singled to start the inning setting the stage for Kowalo’s blast to deep centerfield.

Potomac State (20-7) will host Westmoreland County Community College Saturday, 1 p.m., in a doubleheader.
