Baseball: Catamounts split a pair at Pepsi Invitational to open season

Florence, SC- Evan Mitchell and Kyle Elliott combined to pitch a 5-hitter as Potomac State defeated USC-Sumter 5-1 at the Pepsi Invitational.

Mitchell struck out four in five innings of work and allowed just one run, which was unearned.  Elliott pitched the final two innings, allowing just one hit.

Potomac State was led at the plate by Matt Maiers, whom went 3-3 with two RBI’s. 

Matt Jeffery had two hits and an RBI, while Malik Brown drove in a run.

The Catamounts dropped their season opener earlier in the day as Florence Darlington-Tech got a strong pitching performance from Chris Oakley in route to a 5-1 win over PSC.

The 6’7” red-shirt freshman struck out ten Catamount hitters and allowed just one hit to pick up the win.

Dalton Westfall took the loss for PSC.  Despite allowing just four hits and two earned runs, Westfall dropped to 0-1.

Potomac State will wrap up the weekend on Sunday.  The original schedule has been updated due to impending weather at the Pepsi Invitational.  Potomac State will now play just one game against USC-Sumter at 2:30 p.m.
