Baseball: Catamounts rally for walk-off win on final day at Pepsi Invitational

Florence, SC- Trailing by two runs in the bottom of the last inning, Potomac State rallied to tie the game and then scored a run in extra innings to claim a 5-4 win over Brunswick Community College on the fin al day at the Pepsi Invitational.

Malik Brown’s RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to be the winner for Potomac State who improves to 4-3 on the season.

The Catamounts dropped the opening game on Sunday to USC Lancaster 3-0 behind the stellar performance from right-hand pitcher Jonathan Sabo.

In game two, the Catamounts trailed 3-1 in the fifth when Korey Foltz doubled and later scored on a Brunswick error to cut the lead to 3-2.

Brunswick added a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Nick Yarbrough.

The Catamounts’ rally in the bottom of the seventh was aided from an infield single from Andrew Kowalo, two base on balls, a hit batsman and a wild pitch from Dolphin pitchers.

Ryan Kelchner, who picked up the win in relief worked out of the top of the eighth, stranding the go-ahead run at second base.

In the bottom of the eighth, DeJhard Kimbrough led off the inning with a walk. He moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Tyler Skidmore. Marcel Barrett then laced a single to right field that looked to be the game winner, but Brunswick’s right fielder, Chase Gehringer fielded the ball quickly and delivered a strike that kept Kimbrough at third base.

An intentional walk to Foltz loaded that bases. A strikeout later set the stage for Brown’s heroics. Brown had entered the game as a pinch runner in the seventh inning and had scored the tying run on a wild pitch, now would send a 2-0 pitch up the middle for a single and the walk-off win.

Kowalo and Russell Schwertfeger each finished with two hits.

Potomac State will next travel to Patrick Henry Community College for a four-game series in Martinsville, VA on February 28 and March 1.
