Potomac State sweeps pair of games at No. 15 ranked Harford

Bel Air, MD- Potomac State used extra innings in both games as they swept a pair of games over 15th ranked Harford Community College on Sunday afternoon.

In the opener, Evan Mitchell brushed off a shaky first inning to settle in for an eight-inning complete game 3-2 win.  The sophomore gave up a leadoff home run to Harford’s Jack Hamner and another RBI single from Brett Hash as Harford jumped out to a 2-0 lead. 

After that inning, Mitchell allowed just one more hit from the Owls who are currently the xxx ranked hitting team in the NJCAA.

With the effort, Mitchell improves to 9-1 on the season.  He struck out six and walked just two.

Potomac State rallied to tie the game at 2 all in the third inning when Malik Brown delivered a solo home run to right field and later in the inning Matt Jeffery delivered an RBI single scoring Korey Foltz.

Malik Brown played hero in the top of the eighth as his bases-loaded single scored Foltz for the go-ahead run.

Mitchell then worked around a two-out error to finish the game with his sixth strike out.

In game two Harford starter Jim English was the story early as the sophomore right-hander struck out 16 Potomac State hitters in 7 1/3 innings of work.

Harford got things started early when they jumped on PSC starter Dalton Westfall for four first inning runs that was highlighted by Hash’s 2-run single and Jamal Clarke’s RBI single.

The Owls added two more runs in the fifth with two unearned runs to increase their lead to 6-0.

With just five outs remaining, the Catamounts rallied again starting with two runs in the sixth inning.  Korey Foltz and Matt Jeffery, who had both singled cam e around to score on a double from Matt Maiers making the score 6-2.

In the top of the final inning, the Catamounts drew even with four runs.  Russell Schwertfeger singled with one out to start the rally.  Fraser Brown then singled down the left field line.  Malik Brown then reached on an error from the HCC first baseman. 

Korey Foltz then drilled a deep double to centerfield that was just out of the reach of the Harford outfielder that allowed all three runs to score making the score 6-5.

After a fly out to centerfield, Matt Jeffery grounded a base hit up the middle to score Foltz and tie the game at 6 apiece.

English was able to end the PSC rally with a pop up to second sending the game into the bottom of the seventh.

Matt Maiers came into pitch to begin the seventh for PSC and was able to work around a one-out double from Brett Hash.  After Hash was replaced by a pinch-runner, Maiers was able to induce two pop outs to send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, Potomac State banged out five hits to take an 11-6 lead.  Malik Brown punched a two-run single through a drawn in infield to start the scoring.  Andrew Kowalo added a two-run single of his own, as well as a run scoring double from Maiers.

In the bottom of the eighth Harford battled back with two runs on RBI’s from CJ Young and Brandon Smith, but Maiers was able to get his third strikeout to end the game with the tying run at the plate.

English was the hard-luck loser, while Maiers picked up the win.  Westfall worked five innings and struck out four.

Potomac State improves to 26-8, while Harford falls to 37-9.

The Catamounts now begin a five-game home stand to end the regular season, beginning on Wednesday when the play host to Lakeland Community College for a pair of games at 1:00pm.
