Baseball: Catamounts sweep pair on road at Surry

Dobson, NC- Potomac State College used a familiar pattern on Sunday as they swept a pair of games over Surry Community College: quality pitching and late inning heroics.

In the opener, Evan Mitchell raised his record to 3-0 on the season with six innings of shutout baseball as Potomac State won 2-0. Mitchell allowed just three hits, struck out four and walked four.

PSC broke through a scoreless game in the sixth inning when Matt Jeffery drilled a double with one out. Russell Schwertfeger legged out an infield hit and then stole second to put runners at second and third. Designated-hitter Fraser Brown then drove in both runs with a single up the middle.

Sam Vincenzo worked a perfect last inning to pick up the save.

In game two, Surry jumped out to a 3-0 lead, which they held until the fifth inning.

In the fifth, Potomac State began to chip away at the lead when Malik Brown walked with two outs. He then stole second and came around to score on Korey Foltz’s RBI single making the score 3-1.

PSC added a run in the sixth on a run scoring single from Matt Maiers who drove in Daniel Kerwin, who had singled earlier in the inning making the score 3-2 setting the stage for the final inning.

In the top of the seventh, Malik Brown led off the inning with a double, he moved to third base on a groundout from Foltz and then scored on a single from Andrew Kowalo knotting the game at 3-3.

Dalton Westfall worked around a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh sending the game to extra innings.

In the eighth the Catamounts pushed three runs across the plate with singles from Fraser Brown, Maiers and Foltz.

Ryan Kelchner came on in relief of Westfall to close out the game and secure his first save of the year. Westfall worked seven innings, allowed three runs, two earned and struck out five to pick up the win.

Ben Temple went 4-4 for Surry, with a double and three singles.

Potomac State, (6-3) will host Garrett College on Wednesday at 3PM at Golden Park.
