Baseball: Potomac State speeds past Hagerstown 12-5

Hagerstown, MD- Potomac State banged out seventeen hits and used multiple run innings in the middle of the game to defeat Hagerstown Community College Sunday afternoon 12-5.

Russell Schwertfeger led the Catamounts with by going 4-4, with two walks and three runs scored.  Joe LaRocca, David Delawder and Tyler Skidmore each added two RBI’s.

Colson Kirchner worked seven innings, striking out three to pick up the win.  Connor Christner worked the final two innings and struck out five Hawks hitters.

Justin Smith led the day for HCC, with three hits including a home run and a triple.

PSC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when LaRocca drove home Schwertfeger who had walked earlier in the inning.

HCC matched the run in the bottom half of the frame when Smith scored on a sacrifice fly from Nick Goode.

In the third inning, Schwertfeger led off the inning with a single for PSC and later scored on a fielder’s choice from Delawder.

HCC took the lead in the bottom of the third when Sinjin Shoop led off with a walk and scored on Smith’s triple.  Smith later scored on an RBI from Goode to make the score 3-2.

The Hawks increased the lead to 4-2 on Smith’s RBI single that scored Garrett Spinks, who had been hit by a pitch.

Potomac State responded in the fifth with three runs on RBI’s from Skidmore, DeJhard Kimbrough and Seth Roadcap to take a 5-4 lead.

In the following inning Potomac State pounded out five hits to push four runs across the plate.  Schwertfeger opened the inning with a base hit.  Matt Jeffery was then hit with a pitch. LaRocca then lined a base hit to right field that got past the HCC rightfielder that allowed both runners to score.

LaRocca scored on Delawder’s single and he later scored on a two-out hit from Drew DeBerry.

Kirchner kept the Hawks off the board in the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning.

PSC added three insurance runs in the ninth with RBI’s from LaRocca, Jarin Jenkins and Skidmore.

HCC added a run in the ninth on Smith’s solo home run.

Potomac State, now 22-14, will next be in action on Wednesday when they travel to Winchester, VA for a double header with Shenandoah University.
