Baseball: Catamounts split pair with Catonsville

KEYSER, WV — Russell Schwertfeger went 3 for 3 and Justin Palmer knocked home a pair of runs to lead Potomac State to a win over Catonsville in the first game of their doubleheader at Golden Park.

Catonsville overcame an early 3-0 deficit to win the second game 5-3.

In the opener, Potomac State led the whole way, after scoring two times in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Matt Jeffery and an RBI single by Joe LaRocca.

Schwertfeger hit two doubles and a single to lead the the Catamounts attack.

Christian Laidley tripled and Denzel Johnson doubled for Catonsville (22-11-1).

Kris Van Camp got the win for Potomac State (20-13), allowing only three hits and a run in five innings. He walked four and struck out four.

The second game began well for Potomac State with a three-run first inning, but the Catamounts were shut out the rest of the way. Four errors paved the way for five unearned runs for Catonsville.

Palmer and Schwertfeger singled to begin the PSC first, and LaRocca doubled both home. Jarin Jenkins singled in LaRocca for the quick 3-0 lead.

Edward Nottingham singled twice, Johnson doubled and Dalton Swanger tripled for the Cardinals. LaRocca doubled and singled and Palmer singled twice for the Catamounts.

Jared Rowley absorbed the loss despite allowing no earned runs. He pitched all seven innings, allowed six hits, did not walk a batter and fanned four.

Potomac State hosts Chesapeake today at 2 p.m.
