Baseball: Potomac State pounds Garrett 13-5

Schwertfeger a homer short of hitting for the cycle in 13-5 win

MCHENRY, MD — Russell Schwertfeger singled, doubled and tripled in five at-bats and Jarin Jenkins went 3 for 3 to lead Potomac State to a 13-5 victory over Garrett Wednesday afternoon.

Schwertfeger scored two runs and knocked in two others and Jenkins also drove home two runs for the Catamounts (24-19), who built a 7-1 lead through five innings. After Garrett (14-32) got to within 7-4, Potomac State pulled away with a run in the sixth and five in the seventh.

Matt Jeffery doubled and scored three runs, Tyler Skidmore and Jake Allen hit RBI triples and Marcel Barrett and Jack Ricker doubled for Potomac State, which had 14 hits, including seven that went for extra bases.

Ryan Colaw went 3 for 4 with three singles and scored twice for Garrett. Mark Smith had an RBI single and Mitch Davis drove in two runs.

Brandon Gochenour, Jared Rowley and Cameron Fritz teamed for a six-hitter with seven strikeouts. Gochenour pitched into the sixth for the win.

Potomac State travels to Catonsville, MD on Saturday to face the Community College of Rhode Island at 1 p.m. and Catonsville at 4 p.m., then entertains Cecil in a 1 p.m. twinbill on Sunday.
