Baseball: Potomac State streak ends with split with Mercyhust NE

KEYSER, W.Va. — Jarin Jenkins hit a bases-loaded triple during a five-run first inning and Matt Jeffery had a three-run double in a six-run sixth to help Potomac State to a 15-7 win over Mercyhurst Northeast in the first game of their Saturday doubleheader.

Mercyhurst earned a split of the day and snapped the Catamounts’ 10-game winning streak by salvaging the final game of the four-game series, 12-5.

In the opener, the Potomac State (13-10) led 8-1 after three innings but the margin whittled to 8-7 after a five-run fifth by Mercyhurst Northeast (12-9). The six-run sixth sealed the win for the Cats.

Jenkins and Jeffery both went 3 for 4. Jenkins had a triple, two doubles and four RBIs while Jeffery had a double, three runs scored and three RBIs. Russell Schwertfeger had two hits and Tyler Skidmore added a single, two RBIs and two runs scored. 

Jesse Straudt went 4 for 4 and Pedro Peguero hit two doubles and knocked in two runs for the Saints.

Kris Van Camp allowed four earned runs and struck out five in five innings for the win. Cameron Fritz fanned four in two scoreless relief innings.

In the second game, Mercyhurst broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the fourth inning and added three more in the fifth to get the win.

All three runs in the fourth came after two were out. Luke Baranchak’s RBI triple broke the tie and Zach Miller had an RBI single later in the inning that made it 6-3. Blaze Chamberlain’s two-run double highlighted the three-run fifth that extended the lead to 9-3.

Miller, Scott Pierce and Peguero had two hits for Mercyhurst.

Jeffery doubled and singled, Jenkins and Schwertfeger singled twice and Skidmore doubled for Potomac State, which hosts Dundalk in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Monday.
