Wye Mills, MD- Brandon Gochenour struck out ten Chesapeake hitters and Seth Roadcap drove in five runs as Potomac State won the opening game of the Region XX Tournament Friday afternoon.

Gochenour pitched a seven-inning complete game shutout to raise his record to 6-2.  The freshman walked just three and allowed five hits in the effort.

“I worked down in the zone today”, said Gochenour.  “I pounded the strike zone and had full confidence in my defense behind me.  It was a great team win.”

“Brandon gave us a great performance,” said PSC Head Coach Doug Little.  “He pitched the way a big-game pitcher is supposed to pitch.  I am proud of him and the guys rallied behind him.”

The offensive support was mostly supplied by Roadcap who homered and doubled to drive in five runs.

Roadcap’s day stared off a bit rocky as the sophomore struck out in his first two at bats.

“I told myself I had to clear out my head”, said Roadcap.  “I knew I had more at bats in the game.”

Three other Catamounts had two hits apiece to pace the 13-hit attack.  Jarin Jenkins, Tyler Skidmore and DeJhard Kimbrough each had two hits.

Kimbrough drove in three runs on a bases loaded double that fell in front of the Chesapeake rightfielder in the top of the third inning.

Jack Ricker added an RBI double in the fifth that proceeded Roadcap’s three-run home run.

“The games in this tournament are all hard to win, “said Little.  “This is one of the top Regions in all of JUCO baseball.  Look at the records of these four teams: 46 wins, 32 wins, 32 win and us with 29 wins.  These are all good teams.”

With the win, the Catamounts will face Harford Community College on Saturday at 11am.  Harford downed Hagerstown 15-6 in the other game on Friday.

Harford is now 47-9, while Potomac State is now 29-20.

“Harford is really, really good,” said Little.  “We know it will be a tough ball game, but we just have to execute, make plays and see what happens.”
