Frequently Asked Questions about Potomac State Baseball.

      1.     Why should I attend Potomac State College of WVU?

Potomac State offers small classes with individual attention, student support and tutoring services, and a wide range of academic programs. Academics are a priority for the baseball program. There have been several Academic All-American baseball players at Potomac State.  A study hall is required for all first year players. Potomac State has a beautiful campus and a friendly atmosphere. Our 23:1 student to teacher ratio guarantees that you will receive individual attention in the classroom.  You will not be "just a number" at Potomac State.  82% of our classes have less than 30 students and 50% of our classes have less than 20 students.  As a student athlete at Potomac State, you will have the opportunity to play right away, instead of sitting on the bench for two years.  This will help you improve your athletic skills and make you more attractive to a four-year school.

      2.     What conference do you play in?

Potomac State College is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association, Division 1, Region XX.

      3.     Are scholarships available?

Yes.

      4.     What about living accommodations?

Potomac State College is fortunate to have four residence halls, including a new $ 19 million residence hall, University Place, which opened in the fall of 2007.  Each hall has a full-time resident director and several student-resident assistants.  Each facility comfortably houses two to a room, and is within easy walking distance of the college dining hall, library, and academic buildings.  Residence halls have air conditioning, cable television, and each room has a private telephone line and high speed internet access.

5.   Do baseball players miss a lot of classes because of games or practices?

No.  During the fall season all games are played on the weekends and practices are held in the afternoon when very few classes are scheduled, so no classes are missed.  If a Potomac State baseball player has class during practice time, he goes to class.  It is not an infrequent scene to see Potomac State baseball players arriving at practice late or leaving practice early to attend classes.  During the spring season most games take place on the weekends or during spring break.  Occasionally players will miss classes during a mid-week game.  In this case, players are excused from class but are required to make up all work due to the absence.

6.     Will my classes transfer to a four-year college?

Potomac State College is the only two-year residential, regional division of West Virginia University.  Potomac State is accredited by the North Central Association (NCA) of Colleges and Schools. Most classes will transfer to any four-year institution.

      7.     What kind of baseball field do you have?

In March 2002, Potomac State Baseball dedicated its new baseball facility as Golden Park.  The name is in honor of Gerry and Edna Golden, proprietors of an excavation company, who donated the construction of the field.  The Golden's son, Bryan, served as the Catamount's catcher in 1999 and 2000.  Bryan was drafted by the Chicago Cubs and went on to play two years in their organization.

Golden Park has one of the finest playing surfaces in the region.  The infield surface has a red clay-sand mixture known as 'Ballpark Mix'.  The outfield and infield grass surface is a Kentucky Fescue mixture that has the benefit of a full-field sprinkler system consisting of 85 sprinkler heads.  The sprinkler System was installed by the same company that installed PNC Park's system in Pittsburgh.

Potomac State also has a full infield tarp to prevent rainouts, a new Cub Cadet Zero-Turn lawn mower to 'stripe' the field and its own Kawasaki Mule to assist with dragging and field maintenance. The baseball team also has its own clubhouse facility located beyond left field.

The dimensions of Golden Park are:

                   LF-  328

                   LC-  375

                   CF-  395

                   RC-  370

                   RF-  315

Golden Park features a natural grandstand that is contoured into the earth, two spacious dugouts and bleacher seating of a 250 person capacity.  Future plans include:  Turfed batting cages (completed fall 2003), scoreboard (completed spring 2005), increased stadium seating, turf "Halo" around home plate (completed fall 2005) and a turf area in front of each dugout (completed spring 2004).   Long-range plans include lights and expanded clubhouses.
