Potomac State still alive in eastern Distrcit Tourney

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Potomac State stayed alive in the hunt for the Eastern
District Title by beating Monroe (N.Y.) 14-5 after losing earlier in the day
to Spartanburg (S.C.) by a score of 8-3 at Adelphi University in New York.
Marty Gantt and Ross Hanna both went deep for Spartanburg, and they pulled
away from the Catamounts with a four-run eighth inning. Gannt hit a two-run
homer in the fifth inning and added a single later in the game. Hanna gave
the Pioneers the first run of the day with a solo shot in the fourth.

Potomac State got to within one run with a three-run seventh inning, but
that was negated by the four-run spurt from Spartanburg in the next at bats.
Gary Williams had two of the team's RBIs with a pair of singles, and Kurtis
Voytell also had two base hit. Cody Dalton led PSC with three singles.
Eric Hinkle got three strikeouts pitching in to the eighth inning, but
seemed to run out of gas and allowed the Pioneers to get to him.

Kevin Griffin went deep twice for the Cats during their second game win over
Monroe. His second was a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth that forced
the mercy rule. He hit a solo shot in the second for Potomac Stateŭs first
run, and finished with a total of seven RBIs by adding two singles.
Jason Lombard added three RBIs with a single and a sacrifice fly, and
Dominic Hayes finished up with two doubles and one single. Williams also had
three hits, all singles.

Monroe struck first with two runs in the first, and made it 3-0 with another
in the second. PSC got a run back in the second, and took over with six more
in the third.

Jose Rosario led Monroe with a triple, single and a RBI.
Paul Chenowith got his second straight quality start pitching into the
eighth.

The Catamounts (36-13) will play the loser of USC-Sumter and Spartanburg
today at 3 p.m. If Potomac wins, they would have to play the winner of the
early game twice on Sunday in order to win the district title.
