PSC comes up short in attempt to set attendance record

Potomac State's baseball team came up a little short in its attempt to set a new attendance record at Golden Park Sunday afternoon, but still had a good turnout of fans who withstood wintry conditions to watch the Catamounts play Montgomery College of Rockville, Md.

Billed as the first-ever "Gold Rush", the event which featured free admission and a number of giveaways including a 27-inch color television set, attracted a crowd of 212 who saw the Catamounts win 15-6 to improve their record to 18-11.

"It was a cold day, the wind was blowing, and we had snow flurries on and off the whole game," said Potomac State Coach Doug Little. "Considering the weather, this was a really good crowd. I think on a nice day we could have really pushed and maybe broken the record."

The Golden Park attendance record of 423 was set when the field was dedicated in 2001.

Little said the "Gold Rush" promotion, which was the idea of Assistant Coach Don Schafer, will become an annual event.

The TV set, which was donated by J&J Environmental, was won by Lou Proietti of Toronto, Canada, father of Catamounts' shortstop Lou Proietti.

Drawings for other prizes, including a cell phone donated by TS Cellular, were held between innings of the nine-inning contest.

Originally scheduled as a doubleheader, it was decided to play only one game because of the weather conditions.

"All in all, it was a good day," said Little. "We won and I think everyone had a good time. I'm really happy with it. I want to thank all the people who braved the elements and came out and watched."

Potomac State will be on the road today for a 3 p.m. game against Frederick (Md.) Community College. The Catamounts will travel to Oakland, Md., on Saturday for a doubleheader with Garrett College, then will return to Golden Park next Sunday, May 1, for a single game with Garrett.
