POTOMAC STATE COLLEGE BASEBALL RANKED NO. 9 IN ABCA PRESEASON POLL
KEYSER , WV- The Potomac State College Baseball team has been ranked at Number 9 in the American baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/ Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason poll. It is the highest ranking for Potomac State since moving up to National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I in 2000. Potomac State won the Division II National Championship in 1995.
Last year Potomac State finished the season with a 31-22 record, a Region XX title, an Eastern District Championship and its first ever trip to the Division I JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Key players returning for the Catamounts this season include All-Eastern District sophomore leftfielder Santino Sloboda ( Uniontown , PA / Laurel Highlands ) who leads all returning players with 47 hits, a batting average of .318, with seven steals and four triples.
Joining Sloboda in the outfield are sophomores Justin Dailey (Charles Town, WV/ Jefferson) in center field and Brent Lockhart (Gore, VA / James Wood) in right field. Lockhart hit .333 with a .480 on base percentage while Dailey hit .285 with 26 runs batted in. In the infield, sophomores J.T Osburn (Warrenton, VA / Fauquier) and Ryan Anderson (Winchester, VA / James Wood) return to bolster the lineup after both had 33 runs batted in last season.
The pitching staff is led by sophomore Brett McClain (Shinnston, WV / Liberty) who earned a First Team All-Eastern District team selection last season. McClain had an 8-2 record with a 2.82 earned run average with 63 strikeouts. Sophomore Patrick Adkins (Lavelette, WV / Wayne) returns after winning five games as a freshman with 47 strikeouts in 66 innings pitched. Transfer Joe Stupka (Pittsburgh, PA / Central Catholic) looks to be an impact contributor as well.
