Keyser, WV- Potomac State outlasted two rain delays, a 6 ½ hour game and a pesky ASA team to win a 13-12 in a thrilling opening game of the Region XX Tournament at Golden Park.

Potomac State had built a 13-5 lead heading into the seventh before ASA scored five in the seventh and two more in the ninth to make the final 13-12.

Potomac State had back to back big innings, with a five spot in the fourth and a six runs in the sixth. Dave McNeill’s bases loaded triple in the fourth was the big blow hit of the inning. The big hit in the sixth followed a ninety minute rain delay, when Alan Filauro launched a grand slam home run to finish the six-run inning.

Eduardo Valdez led the offense for the Avengers with two home runs, a solo shot in the fifth and a three-run shot in the seventh. Alberto German also homered for ASA in the seventh when he launched a tape measure two-run shot. Valdez finished with four runs batted in and German with three.

Andy Smithmyer picked up the win for PSC, as the sophomore raised his record to 10-2 with seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Nate Antone worked the ninth to pick up the save. He was benefitted from a caught stealing from catcher Alan Filauro with one out in the ninth and a stellar play on a foul pop fly from T.J. Weisenburg in front of the ASA dugout to end the game.

Jonathan Sanchez took the loss for ASA, his first of the season. As the sophomore walked 10 Catamount hitters in four innings of work.

Zach Markel had three hits for PSC, with three runs batted in. J.K. Filauro also drove in three runs on a double and a hit by pitch.

Nate Antone’s hitting streak ended at 28 games as the Catamount hitter was walked four times in six plate appearances.
