Potomac State Baseball downs Hagerstown 13-6

Hagerstown, MD-Potomac State jumped out to a 9-0 lead en route to a 13-6 win over Hagerstown Community College Friday afternoon.

The Catamounts were led by Zach Markel who had a double and two singles, driving in four runs and Will Brzozowski who added a single and three doubles to plate two runs. Markel and Brzozowski both had run producing singles in the five run opening frame.

Jake Ringold, Nate Antone, Dave McNeill, and Jason Driver all added two hits a piece at the Catamounts banged out 17 hits on the day. Andy Smithmyer went four innings to pick up the win and raise his record to 5-1. The Altoona, PA native struck out five and allowed just two hits. Patrick Bankemper closed out the game with five innings of work, striking out eight and allowing just two runs.

“Patrick did a great job for us today in relief,” said Head Coach Doug Little. “He gave us a great effort and really competed on the mound.”

Hagerstown was lead at the plate by Rashad Talley who had a single, double, and two run driven in.

Cole Sellers took the loss for the Hawks.

“This was a big win for us. It’s been several years since we’ve come to Hagerstown and won here in the regular season,” said Little. “Hagerstown is a quality team, and we just happened to get off to a fast start.”

“We swung the bat well today. Our hitters gave us a chance early by giving us such a big lead; Andy and Patrick did a great job to hold their hitters in check.”

Potomac State, 13-5, will be right back in action on Saturday when they travel to Winchester, VA for a double header with Shenandoah University. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm. Austin Art, 2-1, is scheduled to start game one for the Catamounts and Cody Ellsworth, 1-1, will start game two.

Potomac State’s game on Sunday, originally scheduled to be played at Garrett College, has now been moved to Golden Park. The Catamounts and Lakers will play a single game at 2:00 pm.
