Baseball: Potomac State sweeps pair over Shenandoah

Keyser, WV- Nate Antone singled, tripled and homered in the second game of a twin bill at Golden Park to lead Potomac State to an 8-6 win and a sweep over Shenandoah University Saturday afternoon.

PSC won game one 4-3 when Mason Hershey was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Brendan Miller pitched a complete game in the opener striking out eleven Hornet hitters to raise his record to 3-1.

Shenandoah tied the game at three in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Alex Woods that scored pinch runner Eric Rhodes.

In the bottom of the inning, Jason Driver and Nate Antone led off with back to back singles. PSC was unable to execute a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up and ended up striking out. Shenandoah then intentionally walked Dave McNeill to load the bases. Hershey then came on as a pinch hitter and picked up the game winning RBI when he was hit with a 2-1 pitch.


In the finale Potomac State jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead when Ryan Bennett led off the game with a bloop double and scored on Antone’s triple to right field. Antone then scored on a groundout from Zach Markel.


Leading 3-1, PSC added four runs in the fifth highlighted by Antone’s first home run of the season. The Catamounts added two more runs on a single from Mike Virbickis.


Antone finished the game 3-3 and drove in three runs. Antone now has a fifteen game hitting streak for the Catamount s who have won seven games in a row.

Colin Lyons picked up the win as the sophomore southpaw started, went four innings and struck out eight Shenandoah hitters.  Ben Miller came on in the final inning with no outs and the bases loaded and rtired three hitters in order to pick up his fouth save of the season.


Potomac State, 20-8, heads to Wye Mills, MD on Sunday for a key Region XX game with Chesapeake College . The nine inning game will begin at 2PM.
