Hawks down Potomac State in final frame
Hagerstown, MD- Hagerstown's Eric Schanzenbacher drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Hawks rallied to beat Potomac State 4-3 on Wednesday afternoon.
In the bottom of the ninth with the score tied at 3-3, Terrell Thompson drew a one out walk. He then advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt by Potomac State pitcher Devin Bowles.
Schanzenbacher then delivered a single to left for the win.
“It was a clutch hit and it was what we needed,” Hagerstown Head Coach Scott Jennings said. “We were able to get some timely hits today.”
The Hawks (13-10) trailed the Catamounts 2-0 heading into the home side of the third inning. Drew DeShong drew a walk to be the first HCC player to reach base. He later scored when Thompson recorded the Hawks’ first hit.
After allowing two runs and walking three over the game’s first three innings, HCC starting pitcher Steve Chrzanowski zeroed in and shut down the Potomac State bats. He went the distance, allowing three runs — two earned — on five hits, while fanning five and walking five.
“He battled all nine innings,” Jennings said. “He shut the door on them after they got a few runs and gave us an opportunity to score some runs.”
Potomac State broke the scoreless tie in the second inning when Joel Rosencrance scored on a double play. David Kimbrough scored on a fielder’s choice in the third inning to make it 2-0.
Jake Potter’s RBI single in the fifth gave Potomac State a 3-1 lead.
HCC tied the game at 3 in the bottom of the sixth. Dylan Dunn’s RBI double plated Cole Sellers and Dunn later scored on a Potomac State throwing error.
Potomac State got a quality start from Brendan Miller who went seven innings striking out four, but the Catamounts were unable to hold the lead.
"We are giving away too many game so far this year," said Head Coach Doug Little. "There is such a fine line between winning and losing and right now we are not doing the little things necessary to win games."
Potomac State, (7-11) will be home this weekend at Golden Park for four games. Saturday's doubleheader with Niagara County will be at 1PM and Sunday will also be a 1PM start with Garrett College
