Catamounts Open Region XX Baseball Tournament Friday

Potomac State Baseball
Potomac State, who has won the 10 of the last 12 Region XX Baseball Championships will be gunning for another beginning on Friday at Chesapeake Community College in Wye Mills, MD.

Keyser, WV-Potomac State Head Baseball Coach Doug Little will tell you that none of the Region XX Baseball Championships that Potomac State has won have been easy. But this season if they plan to make it eleven out of the last thirteen championships, it may prove to be the most difficult yet.

"We certainly faced some serious adversity this season. We head into this tournament as the number four seed; we will face off with some really good teams," said Little. "We feel happy to be in it this year and feel like the pressure is on the other teams."

Potomac State College will open the 2012 Tournament on Friday when they travel to Chesapeake Community College in Wye Mills, MD to face the number 1 seed Harford Community College at 1:00 pm in the second game of the tourney. Fans can follow live stats from the Harford Community College website.

Harford and Potomac State split a doubleheader this season at Golden Park April 1st. Potomac State took the opener 6-5 when Joel Rosencrance's 2-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning gave PSC the win. In game two Harford bounced back with an 8-3 victory behind the efforts of right-hand pitcher Jason Seitler who scattered six hits in 5.1 innings while striking out six to earn the win.

The first two games of the tournament will take place Friday. Harford Community College (41-12), the top seed, and ranked #18 in the NJCAA, faces the number four seed Potomac State College (22-23) at 1:00 p.m. That game will be preceded by the number two seed Anne Arundel Community College (40-14) against the number three seed ASA (29-19) at 10:00 a.m.

The winner of the double-elimination tournament will then travel to the NJCAA Eastern District Baseball Tournament beginning May 18 against Spartanburg Methodist College, S.C. (42-16) in Spartanburg, SC.

The winner of the District finals will advance to the 2012 Alpine Bank Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. Potomac State went to last year's series where they finished third. PSC also went to three straight JUCO World Series in 2004, 2005 and 2006, and with Hagerstown Community College's trip in 2008, the Eastern District has been represented by a Region XX school five of the last eight years.

Little thinks this year’s tourney will be intense. "I really think our guys are looking forward to playing. Playoff baseball is intense and I know Harford, Anne Arundel and ASA are all good teams, but now we are all on an even playing field and we will have our hands full if we hope to move on, but we are looking forward to the challenge."
