Strong effort from Everton leads Catamounts past Hagerstown

Hagerstown, MD- Tanner Everton delivered a strong effort on the mound , striking out ten as Potomac State downed Hagerstown Community College 5-2 Sunday afternoon at Hagerstown.

The sophomore, who went 8 1/3 innings allowing just two runs, outdueled HCC’s Kevin Bair to raise his record to 5-3.  Bair went 7 1/3 and struck out two and allowed five runs.

Mike Eisel led Potomac State at the plate going three for four with a single, two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. Zach Stolipher drove in two runs, while Ron Musto and Elliott McCummings each added an RBI.

Garrett Sprankle led HCC with both RBI’s, one on a sacrifice fly, another on a single in the sixth inning.

The catamounts threatened in the top of the first, loading the bases with no outs.  Bair however induced a ground ball that erased the lead runner at the plate.  He then followed it up with a 5-2-3 double play that ended the inning.

PSC jumped to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Eisel blasted a one-out double off the left field fence.  One out later Stolipher grounded a base hit to left that scored Eisel that was misplayed in the outfield that allowed Stolipher to move to second.  Bair was able to escape without any further damage getting a groundout to end the inning.

HCC tied the game in the fourth when Eric Schanzenbacher and Dylan Dunn opened the in ning with base hits.  Tyler Walter then walked to load the bases with no outs.  Sparkle’s sacrifice fly to right scored the tying run.  Everton was able to escape with no further damage striking out the next two Hawk hitters.

PSC added a run in the fifth when McCummings blooped a double that scored Jamison Jones making the score 2-1.  In the sixth Scott Fox scored on a fielder’s choice from Stolipher to increase the PSC lead to 3-1.

HCC answered back in the sixth when Tyler Walter laced a one-out double to left.  He came around to score on Sparkle’s RBI single up the middle to make it 3-2.

Potomac State pushed across two insurance runs in the eighth inning highlighted by back-to-back doubles from Eisel and Musto.  

Jamie Miller came on to relive Everton with one out in the ninth inning after HCC put two runners on base bringing the tying run to the plate.  Miller was able to strike out both hitters he faced to pick up the save and secure the win.

Potomac State, 24-10, has now won 11 in a row, and will next play at Garrett on Tuesday afternoon for a single nine-inning game at 5:00 p.m.
