Baseball: Potomac State set to host Eastern District Championship

Golden Park
Golden Park is set to play host to the 2013 Eastern District Baseball Championship on May 17-19.  The winner advances to the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado

Keyser, WV- Potomac State College will be hosting the 2013 Eastern District Baseball Championship this Friday through Sunday at Golden Park. Four teams will be competing in a double-elimination tournament for the right to advance to the 2013 JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Potomac State, who won the Region XX Championship this past weekend with a 5-2 win over Harford Community College will play the opening game against the Region X Champions, Spartanburg Methodist College.

Potomac State is ranked #15 in the latest NJCAA Division 1 Baseball Poll.

Potomac State (38-14), who won a Division II National Championship in 1995 is looking for its seventh trip to the World Series. The Catamounts have been to Grand Junction four times since 2003, the latest being 2011.

"This is what we have worked for all year," said Potomac State Head Coach Doug Little. "When you can win your Region, you give yourself a chance to get to the ultimate prize, which is in Grand Junction. By no means will it be easy. We face off with three great teams."

SMC, (42-13) is trying to make it to Grand Junction for the second straight year, sixth time since 2000 and eighth time overall. Head Coach Tim Wallace has guided SMC to the World Series in 2001, 2003, 2007, 2009 and 2012.

SMC, ranked #3 by the NJCAA, breezed through the double-elimination Region 10 tournament in Burlington, N.C., without a loss and has won 11 straight.

"Potomac State has a pretty good history," Wallace said. "Everybody's got a lot of pride in their own back yard. To go there and beat them at their place, we'll have to be ready."

Also headed to the District Championship are Region 10 runner-up USC Lancaster (21-28), the 8th seed in the Region X Tournament that made it all the way to the championship game; and ASA College (34-8) of Brooklyn, N.Y.

USC Lancaster and ASA College, (ranked #20) have never been to a JUCO World Series and will be looking for their first trip with a win this weekend.

Potomac State defeated USC Lancaster earlier this season by a score of 8-4 when Scott Fox and Mason Fordyce combined on the win.

This will not mark the first time that Potomac State and SMC will face off in a EDC, but it is the first time at Golden Park.

In 2001, SMC defeated Potomac State at Duncan Park in South Carolina to advance to Grand Junction. In 2009, the Pioneers beat PSC in the championship game in New York to advance again. In 2006 PSC beat SMC in the opening game of the EDC and eventually won the tournament for their third straight JUCO appearance.
