Catamounts rally for late win over Florence Darlington

Florence, SC- The 2013 Potomac State Baseball has had one current theme in each game thus far this season: close games. Friday night was no different, except that this time the Catamounts found a way to be on the winning side.

PSC rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to knock off the host Stingers by a score of 3-2 in the opening game of the Pepsi Invitational.

Zach Stolipher drove in the winning run with an opposite field double that scored that scored Elliot McCummings to give PSC the lead.

FDT took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Nate Kuhns led off the game with a walk and quickly scored on Stephen Dowlings double down the line. Dowlings then scored on Randon Sandifer’s single.

Potomac State starter Jamie Miller then held FDT in check through the rest of his time on the mound. Miller worked 4 2/3 innings and was relieved by Brandon Coredell who pitched 1 1/3 innings and picked up the win.

PSC closed the lead to 2-1 in the second inning when Stolipher scored on a single from Mike Eisel.

In the bottom of the sixth, trailing 2-1 PSC’s Tre Porter opened the inning with a single. Porter then stole second and went to third on Elliot McCumming’s single. McCummings moved to second on an errant throw from the outfield putting runners at second and third.

Ron Musto lofted a sacrifice fly that scored Porter and moved McCummings to third setting the stage for Stolipher’s game winning hit.

In the bottom of the inning the Stingers threatened putting the winning runs on base but Eilsel was able to strike out the final hitter to pick up the save.

Stolipher finished 2-2 with a run scored and an RBI.

Potomac State, (1-3) will be back in action on Sunday when the play Cecil College at noon and then USC-Lancaster at 5:00pm.
