Pitching leads the way as PSC wins 3 of 4 in opening weekend
Florence, SC- A strong pitching performance from the Potomac State Catamounts helped them win three out of four games in their opening weekend in Florence, SC.
Freshman Matt Maiers picked up his first collegiate win, as he and fellow freshman Kyle Elliott combined on a two-hit shutout of USC-Lancaster in the final game of the weekend. Maiers went five strong innings striking out two and Elliott worked two scoreless innings to pick up the save and complete the 1-0 win.
Adam Meeker’s sacrifice fly in the fourth inning that scored Connar Bastaich proved to be the only run in the game. Bastaich finished 2-3 in the game.
Potomac State dropped the opening game to host Florence Darlington Tech by a score of 8-1. FDT’s Evan Raynor struck out seven PSC hitters and allowed just one run.
In game two the Catamounts rebounded with a 2-1 extra inning win over Region XX rival Cecil College. Jamison Jones’ RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning that scored pinch runner Jamaal Windom gave PSC the walk-off win.
Dalton Westfall gave PSC a quality start with 4 2/3 innings of work. The freshman struck out five and walked one and allowed just one unearned run. Drew Hemminger came on in relief and was just as effective as he struck out five in 3 1/3 innings of work and kept the game knotted at 1-1. Josh McKown worked the top of the ninth and picked up his first win of the season.
Tre Porter accounted for PSC’s first run when he belted a triple to centerfield and came home to score when the throw skipped away from the Cecil third baseman.
In game three Potomac State rallied back from a 4-0 deficit to score seven unanswered runs for a 7-4 win over Georgia Highlands College.
GHC capitalized on five walks from PSC starter Jamie Miller to race out to a 3-0 lead through the first three innings. Brandon Cordell came on for PSC and pitched the final four innings, allowing just one run, striking out four and walking none to pick up the win.
Potomac State tied the game with four runs in the fourth inning that was highlighted by Fraser Brown’s two run double.
Korey Foltz and Daniel Kerwin added RBI’s for the Catamounts.
Potomac State will head back to Florence, SC this weekend for four more games in the Pepsi Invitational. On Friday PSC will play Region X powerhouse Pitt Community College at 5: 00 p.m. On Saturday PSC will play Florence Darlington Tech at 10:30 a.m. and Pitt at 3:30 p.m. On Sunday Potomac State plays Cecil College at 10:30 a.m.
