Men’s Basketball: Chase lifts PSC over Beaver, into Region XX title game

Catamounts will play Cecil today at 1 p.m.

HAGERSTOWN — George Chase scored 21 points and had a game-sealing steal and dunk in the final seconds as top-seeded Potomac State beat eighth-seeded Beaver County (Pa.) 71-65 in the Region XX, Division II, A Bracket semifinals Saturday at Hagerstown Community College.

The Catamounts (22-4), No. 17 in the latest national poll, will play fourth-seeded Cecil (19-9)  in today’s 1 p.m. championship game, with the winner advancing to the national tournament. Potomac State beat Cecil 80-65 during the regular season.

Chase hit 9 of 18 field goals, with three being three-pointers, and also had a team-high 10 rebounds for the Catamounts, who led 41-32 at halftime.

Potomac State never trailed in the second half, but Beaver sliced the margin to just two points, 49-47 early on, and got it to 69-65 with a minute to go.

Beaver missed two opportunities to get even closer as the Catamounts missed three free throws on their next two possessions. Chase came up with a big steal and his breakaway dunk made it 71-65 with 12 seconds remaining.

Torrey Mayo made 9 of 10 free throws and finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and five of Potomac State’s 11 steals. Daylin Davis shot 6 for 8 from the field and had 14 points and six rebounds.

Deyshawn Martin had 19 points and 11 rebounds, Aaron Barlow 15 points and Timmy Thompson 13 points for Beaver (17-12).
