Men’s Basketball: Potomac State tops Beaver in double OT

MONACA, Pa. — JR Kerr scored a game-high 34 points and Potomac State rallied back from a seven-point deficit in the first overtime to collect a 117-109 double overtime victory over Beaver County on Thursday evening.

The Catamounts led by 13 points with five minutes remaining in regulation, but the Titans cut their deficit to single digits with two and a half minutes to go. With the score at 86-83 in favor of the Catamounts, Eric McGee, the Titans’ leading scorer, made an off-balance shot from midcourt with 0.6 seconds remaining, sending the game to overtime.

After a cold start to the first overtime, the Catamounts started cutting away at their seven-point deficit with just under two minutes to play. After converting on a three-pointer, Potomac State deployed a full-court press with 37 seconds remaining, forcing a traveling violation and giving the ball back to the Catamounts. BJ Hill hit a jumper with 23 seconds remaining to cut Potomac State’s deficit to two. The Catamounts fouled and Beaver County missed both free throws. Justin Milstead drove to the hoop and was fouled with 2.3 seconds remaining — he nailed both free throws to send the game into a second overtime at 96-96.

Potomac State outscored the Titans in the second overtime, 21-13, to improve to 11-3 on the season.

Kerr made 13 of the Catamounts’ 43 field goals. One of those 13 was a three-pointer, while Kerr also shot 7 of 10 from the free-throw line. Milstead added 22 points on seven field goals and an 8 for 10 effort from the charity stripe.

Malcolm Weathers added 15 points, BJ Hill had 10 points and Kyle Jackson nine.

McGee scored 30 points for Beaver County, who also had 25-point games from Nick Barney and Joe Wynn.

Potomac State will host Allegany on Monday at 7 p.m.
