Men's Lacrosse Catamounts Stay Hot to Overpower NOVA

Potomac State College Men’s Lacrosse (4-4) picked up their first road win of 2017 with a 24-10 beating of Northern Virginia CC in Herndon, VA Tuesday afternoon. After a slow start that tied the score at 4-4 after the first quarter, the Catamounts won the second quarter 7-0 as part of a 9 goal run to break the game open.

After having 4 players with 6 points apiece in the midweek win over CCBC Catonsville 22-6, the Catamounts remained balanced in scoring, led by Shane Thompson’s (Charlottesville, VA/University High, WV) 7 goals and 5 assists and Dakota Stingo’s (Fairmont, WV/Fairmont Sr.) 9 goals, 1 assist. The Catamounts added points from Layton Kirby (Hilton Head, SC/Hilton Head) with 4 goals, Caden Walters (Ocoee, FL/Ocoee) 3 goals and 4 assist and Jacob Good (Tunnelton, WV/Preston) with 1 goal. Michael Sphar (Arthurdale, WV/Preston) added 2 assists.

The Catamounts also put together one of their top defensive performances of the season, paced by Will Walters (Ocoee, FL/Ocoee) with 7 caused turnovers and 12 ground balls, and Shane Bourne (Terra Alta, WV./Preston) with 7 caused turnovers and 6 ground balls. Goalies Tyler Nisenfeld (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast) and Chris Sphar (Arthurdale, WV/Preston) combined for 6 saves on the afternoon.

PSC won 28-38 face-offs, led by Rocko Hillhouse (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen) with a career high 25 wins. Catamounts also out ground balled NOVA 58-30 and outshot the Nighthawks 71-27. Potomac State is currently 9th in the country in goals per game. The Catamounts also house the top two goal scorers in the country with Shane Thompson’s 42 and Dakota Stingo with 33.

Potomac State returns to action next Monday, April 10th as they travel to Anne Arundel to battle the Riverhawks. Face-off set for 4 pm.
