Potomac State Soccer battles to draw with Hagerstown
HAGERSTOWN, MD — Steve Holtschneider and Guidiel Guzman scored goals, and Connor Fungaroli made a key save late in the second overtime as Potomac State played to a 2-2 tie with Hagerstown in junior college men’s soccer Monday afternoon.
Holtschneider scored on an assist from Justin Winebrenner to tie the match 1-1 late in the first half. Guzman’s goal, on a pass from Ricardo Murphy, gave Potomac State (8-2-1) a 2-1 lead midway through the second. Justin Yates and Gene Sape scored for Hagerstown. Sape’s goal, in the 78th minute, tied it.
Fungaroli, ranked 12th in the nation in goalkeeper save percentage, made a crucial save on a 1-on-1 breakaway by Hagerstown with four minutes left in the second 10-minute sudden death overtime.
Potomac State led in shots, 20-11, and in corner kicks, 7-1.
Fungaroli finished with nine saves. Hagerstown’s Kenny Frederickson and Chip Rittenhouse had eight each.
The Catamounts play at Howard on Wednesday in a key Region XX game. Currently, Potomac State is third in the Region XX, Division III standings with games with Howard and Rockville yet to play.
