Guzman's goals lift Potomac State to 3-1 opening victory

KEYSER, W.V. — Potomac State College’s Gudiel Guzman scored two goals to lead the Catamounts to a season-opening and home-opening 3-1 victory over Salem International University Sunday afternoon at Stayman Field.

Guzman’s first goal was the only score of the first half and it came 12:06 into the game. Mountain Ridge graduate Justin Winebrenner assisted.

Juan Flores gave Potomac State a 2-0 lead unassisted at 55:06 of the second half.

Dwyane Phidd pulled Salem to within one on an unassisted goal at the 60:24 mark.

Guzman’s second goal iced the victory on an assist by Trey Ogilbie at 70:18.

Salem (0-1) outshot Potomac State, 19-13, and had one more corner kick, 5-4.

Potomac State’s Conor Fungaroli stop eight shots while Salem’s Ryan Wells made 10 saves.

Second-year head coach Ray Kiddy cited Hampshire grad David Annadale, Winebrenner, Zachary Saylor, Sam Crickenberger, Jeff Trautwein and former Northern standout Steven Holtschneider for outstanding play.

Potomac State (1-0) hosts Patrick Henry Wednesday.
