Ranker’s goal lifts Potomac State past PG
Catamounts face Montgomery on Saturday for Region XX Championship
UPPER MARLBORO, MD —Chris Ranker kicked the only goal of the match to send Potomac State to its second-consecutive Region XX title game with a 1-0 win over Prince George’s on Thursday afternoon.
The second-seeded Catamounts (15-1-2) will now square off against the only team that has beaten them this season when they face top seed Montgomery (20-1) Saturday, at noon, in the Region XX finals. It is the rematch of last year’s Region XX championship, which Montgomery won 1-0. That was the same score that it beat the Cats by early this season for their only loss.
The Raptors are currently the No. 2 team in NJCAA Division III, while Potomac State was ninth before being dropped because of a violation with a statistic-entry requirement.
Ranker broke the scoreless silence when Derek Swanson assisted him off of a corner kick at 26:11 in the first half. From there, it was Ranker’s goalie Connor Eberly, also a Mountain Ridge graduate, who held the Owls off the scoreboard by making eight saves in his ninth shutout of the season.
Eberly and Ranker make up half of Potomac State’s four sophomore captains. Brandon Cutter, also a former Mountain Ridge standout, and Caleb Goodin are the other captains. In their two years at PSC, the four have amassed a record of 34-2.
PG’s Pedro Pecheo, an All-Region goalie for the Owls, made three saves on six PSC shots.
The Cats’ previous game with Prince George’s finished in a 0-0 tie.
