Men’s Soccer: Potomac State falls in Region XX tourney

ARNOLD, MD -- Michael Thompson had a goal and an assist and Anne Arundel converted a pair of second-half penalty kicks as the eighth-ranked Pioneers defeated Potomac State 5-1 in their Region XX men's soccer quarterfinal playoff game Saturday evening.

Anne Arundel (14-3-1) led 2-0 at halftime. Juan Tamayo began the second half with a penalty kick and Thompson scored 20 minutes later to give Anne Arundel a 4-0 cushion with 23 minutes to play.

Tyler Sisler scored Potomac State's goal, unassisted, with just under five minutes remaining. Nathan Stagnaro answered by hitting a penalty kick with 58 seconds left.

The Catamounts had a pair of goals called back. Those goals, coupled with the two Anne Arundel penalty kicks, were too much to overcome against one of the top-ranked teams in the country.

Brandon Long and Brent Orbell, an All-American as a freshman, scored in the first half for the Pioneers, who led in shots 9-5 and in corner kicks 3-1.

Alex Sproule made four saves in goal for Potomac State, which ends its season with an 8-7 record.
