Women’s Basketball: Butler tops Potomac State

BUTLER, Pa. — Julia Baxter put up 27 points and the Butler Pioneers pulled away from Potomac State beginning in the second quarter of an 86-57 win over Potomac State Monday evening in the Catamounts’ final outing of 2016.

Potomac State enters the winter break at 5-3 and does not play until Jan. 12 when it hosts Garrett College. After opening the season with five wins, the Cats welcome the time off following three straight losses.

Baxter made 12 field goals on the path to 27, and three other Pioneers scored at least 10. Melissa Verlotte finished with 16 points, Christina Davis had 15 and Sadie Moore added another 13.

Butler built a 16-14 lead by the close of the first quarter, then began stretching that lead in the second to 35-14 at halftime. The lead grew to 61-42 by the end of the third.

For Potomac State, Kirsten made six field goals and six free throws to score a team-high 18 points, while Kenzie Chrisman had 10 points.
