Women’s Basketball: Catamounts open season with convincing win

KEYSER, W.Va. — Sydney Lyons and Haley Butcher each had a double-double as Potomac State defeated Howard 97-44 in their season-opener on Thursday night.

Lyons had a game-high 24 points on nine field goals and 6 of 7 shooting from the free-throw line, while also grabbing a team-high 14 rebounds in the Catamounts’ season opener.

Butcher converted on five field goals and also a 6 for 7 performance from the charity stripe to finish with 16 points and 13 rebounds, 10 of which came on the offensive end.

Brie Kunis added 10 points. Johnee’ Durham and Bethany Arndt had nine apiece, and Ashley Arndt and Lyric Moon finished with eight points each. Kaliyah Creasey dished out a team-high seven assists.

The Catamounts led after each quarter 23-6, 45-19 and 72-34.

Millena Habtemariam scored a team-high 18 points for Howard, while Da’zia Morant added 13.

Potomac State travels to Patrick Henry Community College on Saturday, 12 p.m., to play Guilford Tech, who is currently ranked No. 8 in the country in NJCAA Division II.
