Lady Cats knock off defending National Champs

KEYSER, W.V. — In a big day for the Potomac State women’s soccer team, the Catamounts secured the top seed in the Region XX Tournament, finished the regular season undefeated and did it by beating defending national champion Montgomery-Rockville, 2-1, Saturday at Stayman Field.
The Cats finish the regular season 12-0 and will open play in the Region XX tourney at Anne Arundel on Thursday. It is the first undefeated regular season in the program’s history.

The Knights took a 1-0 lead when Rachelle Anderson scored at 30:26 of the first half and Rockville took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Cats scored both of their goals in the second half with Cassie Alamo assisting on both. Angel Dixon scored the first goal at 24:07 and Laurel Podlesnik got the game-winner at 43:17.
Acasha Smith had three saves as Potomac State’s goalie, and Ashley Letter stopped six shots for the Knights.
Potomac State led 9-4 in shots and 5-2 in corner kicks.
Ashley Thomas and Rebekah Messenger were cited by Sprouse for outstanding defensive play.
On the season Potomac State has outscored opponents by a margin of 66 goals scored and only 7 against.
