Lady Cats Soccer looks to offense to have successful year. PSC opens 2008 campaign at home Tuesday at Stayman Field Keyser, WV--The Potomac State Women's looks to take some serious strides for the 2008 season as they return five starters from last year's 6-3 squad. The Catamounts will return Megan Clark, Carly Drake, Tia Logsdon, Meagan Riecke and Lauren Trenter. Clark, Drake and Riecke, received All-region honors for the 2007 season. "Cautiously optimistic" are the words head coach, Mark Sprouse used to describe his opinion of the team's chances in 2008. "We have a skilled bunch of players, but as a team, they came in with a deficit in conditioning and that has contributed to a significant number of injuries, said Sprouse. The team will definitely miss Sarah Willetts, who ended her career tied for the most career goals at Potomac State with former PSC standout, Sarah Bell (2002-2003). Also gone is Katie Sloan, who also was a generous scoring producer in 2007. The incoming freshman forwards are KHS standout Kacee Whetzel, Hampshire County native Shannon Sine, and Lindsay Jenkins, from Winchester, VA. "Kacee is the finisher we need and has excellent speed and power. She will be complimented by the skill and intelligent play of Shannon and Lindsay ", mentioned Coach Sprouse. Most of the Catamount midfield returns with new additions, Caroline Sanner, Colleen Ress and Sarah Legge improving an already strong unit, Sprouse added, "If they stay healthy, this has potential to be the best all-around midfield we've ever had at Potomac State". The defense, usually the Cat's strength, is the least experienced part of the team, with Reicke and Trenter anchoring the center. Potomac State had tied a team record with four shutouts in 2007. The freshman defenders are Clarissa Blamble, Devan Yoder and Kendra Jackson. "Our defense has very capable athletes, they just have to mesh as a unit" said Sprouse. The starting goalkeeper, in her first year at Potomac State is Collette Ellerman, Sprouse had this to say about the New Jersey native, "She's powerful, fast and fearless; we'll be counting on her positive attitude and leadership". When asked the key to success this season Sprouse answered, "Lots of colleges have good players; you have to get gel as a team. We have players from 5 different states and 13 different high schools; they have to come together as a team on and off the field". Potomac State's first game is at home on Tuesday September 2nd against Patrick Henry College. Game time is 5:00 pm at Stayman Field.
