Softball: Potomac State knocks off Mercyhurst for win #20
NORTHEAST, Pa. — Savannah Hose went 4 for 4 and Morgan Wright, Brittani Chambers and Taylor Rice had three hits to lead Potomac State to its 20th win of the season, a 10-2 victory over Mercyhurst Northeast in junior college softball Sunday afternoon.
The 20th win for coach Jim Walton’s Catamounts (20-4) came against a nationally-ranked opponent as Mercyhurst (31-7) is No. 12 in the latest NJCAA Division II poll.
The win came in the second game of a doubleheader. Mercyhurst won the opener 9-0.
In the PSC win, Hose hit a double and three singles to lead a 21-hit attack. Chambers had a double and two singles and Wright and Rice three singles. Wright also had two RBIs.
Sydney Ouzts was the beneficiary of all the offense and tossed a three-hitter for the win. She did not strike out a batter but was backed by errorless defense.
The first game was all Mercyhurst, as the Saints broke open a 2-0 game with a seven-run fourth inning.
Ronette Claar fired a one-hitter, struck out eight and walked only one for the win.
Brittani Chambers had Potomac State’s only hit, a fifth-inning single.
Shelby Overturf had three hits for Mercyhurst.
The Catamounts play again on Tuesday in a 3 p.m. a doubleheader at CCAC-South in West Mifflin.
