Softball: Mongan’s homers help Potomac State split with Frederick

FREDERICK,MD — Whitley Mongan hit a pair of home runs and Beth Cook hit one to push Potomac State to a 14-4 win over Frederick that allowed the Catamounts to split a doubleheader with the Cougars Thursday evening in Frederick.

The Catamounts stranded nine runners and Frederick scored three times in the fourth inning of a 4-2 Cougars win that began the day before the Cats’ bats blew up for eight runs in the first inning of the 10-run win to close out the evening.

Mongan hit a two-run bomb in the second inning, a three-run homer in the sixth and added a single while finishing with five RBIs. Cook had three RBIs total on the back of a two-run home run in the first inning and an RBI single.

Hali Jarell hit a double and two singles, Chelsea Shepherd hit a double and two singles and Ruby Fridley hit two singles.

In the opener, Cook, Cheyenne Earle and Alyssa Jones all had two singles for PSC’s six hits.

Shelly Morse led the Cougars with two doubles and two RBIs.

Potomac State (22-9) plays Southern Maryland at home on Saturday.
