Softball: Phoenix defeats Potomac State 9-2

CLINTON, Miss. — Potomac State got the hits, but couldn’t take advantage of them as the Catamounts fell in the Junior College Division II National Softball Tournament game to Phoenix College, 9-2.

The Catamounts (28-12) moves into the loser’s bracket and will play Labette, Kan., today at 1:30 p.m. CDT. Phoenix (48-9), the tournament’s top seed, takes on Kankakee, Ill. (36-6) today at 3:30 CDT.

Potomac State hit the ball well according to head coach Jim Walton but couldn’t get the timely hit they needed to knock off the fourth-ranked team in the nation.

“We left 12 runners on base,” he said, “and we only scored two runs. In the first inning, we left the bases loaded. In the second we left two.”

The Catamounts scored one run in each inning and the game was tied at 2 after two. Phoenix, however, who finished with 11 hits, took a 4-2 lead after three, moved ahead 6-2 after five and was up 9-2 at the end of the sixth.

Whitley Mongan had three hits including two doubles. Sam Hoban and Beth Cook each had two singles and an RBI, and Shayna Vetter had two base hits.

Phoenix Molly Stern drove in four runs, belting a two-run home run in the fifth inning and she had a two-run double. Morgan Leonard had solo home run in the third inning and she had a base hit.

Danica Rogers pitched five innings and Vetter relieved in the sixth for Potomac State. Phoenix Kirsten Hostetler started and was pulled in the first for Garcia Kennedy, who finished the game.

Both teams commited one error.
