Softball: Phoenix stops Potomac State

Four-run fourth hurts Catamounts in 10-2 defeat

CLINTON, Miss — Top-seeded Phoenix College hammered five home runs and had a four-run fourth inning to hang a 10-2 loss on No. 16 seed Potomac State on the first day of the NJCAA Division II Softball National Championship at Traceway Park in Clinton, Mississippi.

The Bears, who have nine national titles and eight since 2000, got two-run home runs from Aaryanna Bracamonte and Jenna Nimitz, while Danae King, Brittany Hopper and Cheyanne Tucker all slammed solo shots. Nimitz also hit a double and Bracamonte added a single.

The Catamounts (32-8) lead 1-0 after one pitch when Carly Nixon greeted Phoenix’s Kennedy Garcia with a home run in the top of the first. Nixon also had a single, while Abby Doyka gave PSC a solo home run in the fourth inning. Chelsea Shepherd and Beth Cook hit two singles apiece for the Cats.

Potomac State looks to stay alive when it faces Illinois Central, the eighth seed, today at 1:30. Phoenix will play ninth-seeded Labette Community College (Kansas) today at 3:30.
