Softball: Potomac State wins a pair at Myrtle Beach
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Beginning with Abbie Doyka's two-out, ninth-inning game-winning single in the first game, Potomac State College softball put a pair of nines on the board in a doubleheader sweep Tuesday, beating Grand Rapids Community College in nine innings, 9-8, in the first game, then dusting off Penn State Fayette, 9-0, in four innings in the second game.
Doyka's single, which got between the Grand Rapids third baseman and shortstop in the ninth inning of the first game, scored Sierra Farris from third for the game-winner.
Abby Gillingham hit two singles and a triple for Potomac State, knocking in two runs and scoring two. Lacey Miller hit a two-run triple and Megan Newcomb doubled and singled to knock in a run.
Makenah Harrington entered the game in the sixth inning to work the final four innings to pick up the win for the Catamounts, who used a single run in the second, three in the third and four in the sixth to tie the score at 8-8.
In the second game, Potomac State needed just four innings to dispatch Penn State Fayette, as Newcomb hit a home run and a single to knock in three runs and score two more. Doyka singled and doubled in the second game, while Kadi Cosgrove singled three times.
