Softball: Potomac State advances in Region XX with sweep

Catamounts beat Cecil 5-1, 8-2 in best-of-three series

KEYSER, W.Va. — Kadi Cosgrove struck out nine in the first game and Carly Nixon and Megan Newcomb belted home runs in the second to lead Potomac State over Cecil College in the opening round of the Region XX tournament Sunday afternoon at Potomac State.

The Catamounts (23-13) advance to the second round where they will play Catonsville on Friday at Frederick Community College at a time to be determined.

In the first game of the best-of-three series, Potomac State took a 2-0 lead with two runs in the third inning. The Seahawks trimmed it to 2-1 in the top of the fifth on Rebecca Ashman’s RBI double.

Potomac State put the game away with a three-run sixth.

Abby Gillingham was the Catamounts leading hitter with three singles, an RBI and a run scored.

Winning pitcher Cosgrove allowed four walks, two hits and an earned run. At the plate, she belted a double, scored and had an RBI.

In the second game, Cecil struck first with a run in the first inning before the Catamounts took control with four in the third and two two-run innings in the fifth and sixth.

Nixon led Potomac State   with a solo home run, a base hit and two RBIs. Newcomb had three hits, including her two-run blast in the sixth,   and she scored three times. Gillingham scored twice and had two hits including a double.

Ashman had three of Cecil’s nine hits, getting a fifth-inning home run to go along with two singles.
