Lady Cats pick up first win in 2009
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Potomac State College got its first win of the season Monday by defeating County College Morris of Randolph, N.J. 8-7, in the Snowbird Classic held in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Potomac State scored four runs in the first, but would have to rally after Morris had five cross the plate in the second. After tying the game in its half of the second, PSC would take the lead for good with two runs in the third.
Brittany Wright had two singles and two RBIs. Lisa Berry and Shelia Armel each had RBI doubles.
Jenn Powers had three singles for Morris.
Potomac State wins two of three
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Lisa Barry's two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning helped Potomac State take two of its three games played Wednesday in the Snowbird Classic at Myrtle Beach.
The Catamounts started the day by getting strong pitching and hitting in a 9-1 win over Cumberland (N.J.). They struggled in the field to allow three unearned runs and lose 3-0 to Southwestern (Iowa) in the second game, before Barryıs hit sent them to a 9-8 win over Rochester (Minn).
Aaryka Anglin yielded just three hits and one earned run in a complete-game effort against Cumberland. Brittany Kolb hit a three-run triple as part of a five-run fourth inning that gave PSC a 7-0 lead. Kayla Stickel hit a double and a single, while Morgan Shockey and Taylor Butts had one double each. Butts also drove in two runs.
Anglin and Rochelle Wolford held Southwestern to only two hits, but the Cats committed four errors in the field to allow three unearned runs to score.
For Potomac, Brittany Wright doubled while Shelia Armel and Barry had one single apiece.
The Catamounts got some revenge with the win over Rochester, after the Yellowjackets used three errors in the seventh inning to beat Potomac State 7-4 on Sunday.
Armel led the team with four RBIs on a pair of hits, and Stickel had two doubles and two RBIs.
The Cats entered the sixth inning trailing 8-4, but scored five times during the at-bats to take the lead. Stickel struck out all three batters in the top of the seventh to earn the win.
Potomac State is now 3-2 in Myrtle Beach, and is 3-4 overall. They play Alfred State today at 8 a.m., and Northampton at 10 a.m.
Pitching, defense win one game, costly in another
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Potomac State won its first game behind strong performances from its pitching staff and defense, but then had the same things fail them in a loss during the second game Thursday.
Stickel rang up eight strikeouts and walked only two batters in earning the 3-1 victory over Alfred State (N.Y.). She allowed six hits, but the only run was unearned.
At the plate, the Catamounts got a run-scoring triple from Wright and two singles from Watts.
Cindy Lober had two singles for Alfred.
Potomac State fell apart in the second inning of the second game where it allowed six unearned runs as it lost 8-4 to Northampton. Potomac State gave up eight unearned runs overall.
The Catamounts made a total of eight errors, but was outscored even though it outhit Northampton (Pa.) 10-8.
Stickel and Wright both went 4-for-4 in game two, with a double and three singles each. Stickel finished with three RBIs.
Potomac State ends spring trips with momentum
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Moorefield graduate Brittany Wright drove in four runs, and Potomac State brought in 14 between the third and fourth inning in a 16-0 win over Massassoit (Mass.) in the Catamountsı final day of their spring trip.
Wright used a double and a triple to collect her four RBIs, and catcher Kayla Watts, a Petersburg grad, had three RBIs with a double. Kayla Stickel finished with a double and a single, and Brittany Kolb hit two singles.
The Catamounts got one run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead, and turned on the heat with eight more runs in the third. Not content there, PSC added six more runs in the fourth to put the score at its final resting spot.
Former Bishop Walsh hurler Rochelle Wolford started and worked the first three innings without allowing a hit. Sheila Armel allowed the only hit of the day for Massassoit, but kept the shutout intact.
"We're pleased to finish the trip on a strong note," said Potomac State Head Coach Jim Walton. "The whole trip was a positive for our team. We got to learn alot about our team, and get to take some momentum into the rest of the regular season, and conference play."
Now 5-5, the Cats went 5-3 on their trip. They play at Beaver County on Monday at 3 p.m.
