Potomac State Softball rolls over Garrett
KEYSER, W.V. — Jessica Shirley hit two home runs in the same inning and it was just a taste of Potomac State’s offensive output as the Catamounts swept both games of a doubleheader by the same 19-0 score Monday afternoon at Potomac State.
Potomac State had already taken an 8-0 lead in the first inning of the first game before scoring 11 times in the second to account for all of its runs. The Cats followed a similar path in the second game by scoring 10 times in the first inning and adding nine in the second before holding on for another big win.
Shirley was the star of the first game when she followed a three-run second inning home run with a two-run shot later in the same frame. Mandy Workman helped PSC (9-7) score eight times in the first inning with a solo shot.
Victoria Thompson had two singles and a double in the win, while Chelsea Holcomb added two doubles and a single. Christie Shaw singled three times.
Losing pitcher Chelsea Miller had a double in the fourth inning for one of Garrett’s two hits.
Tiffany Biggs had seven strikeouts and Alli Lantz added two in the combined shutout.
Lantz struck out eight in working all five innings of game two, allowing three hits and no walks.
Thompson connected for a three-run shot in the second inning, and Workman added two singles and a double. Former Allegany High School standout Bethany Hansel finished with two doubles and a single.
Potomac State and Garrett will play again in a doubleheader on Wednesday. Due to the Lakers’ field not being ready, the games will be played at Potomac State, but Garrett will be the home team.
