Potomac State wins pair on opening day of Snow Bird Classic

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Tiffany Biggs homered in the first game and Bethany Hansel, Jessica Shirley and Victoria Thompson did the same in the second as Potomac State beat Wells (N.Y.) College 8-0 and Hudson Valley (N.Y.) 6-1.

In the first game, which went six innings, Biggs hit a two-run home run and an RBI single to lead the Catamounts, who banged out nine hits. Hansel smacked a double and single and knocked in three runs.

Shirley and Victoria Thompson combined on a four-hit shutout. Shirley got the win, allowing two hits and striking out seven over the first three innings. Thompson allowed two hits and fanned three over the final three innings.

In the second game, the Catamounts erased an early 1-0 deficit with home runs by Thompson and Hansel in a five-run third inning.

The big inning was more than enough support for Biggs, who tossed a five-hitter, walked one and struck out 10 in a complete-game win.

Thompson belted a three-run homer, Hansel had a two-run shot, Shirley hit a solo homer and a single, and Christie Shaw had two singles for the Cats.

The wins kept the Catamounts unbeaten through four games. Today, they play Grace College at 9 a.m. and Hudson Valley at 11.
